The Middle-Belt Tigers have etched their name in history as the first-ever champions of the Nigeria Super League, edging past Southern Sharks by six runs in a gripping final at the TBS Cricket Oval, Lagos.
In a tightly contested finale that lived up to its billing, the Tigers held their nerve in the closing stages to defend a modest total of 104/5 in 10 overs, restricting the Sharks to 98/7 in a dramatic run chase.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, the Tigers got off to a bright start through Solomon Chilemanya, who smashed 17 off just seven balls to set the tone early.
Olaleye Olayinka Elijah anchored the innings with a composed 21 off 14 deliveries, before David Ankrah provided the late fireworks with a blistering 22 off 10 balls.
Eghosa Destiny added valuable runs as the Tigers crossed the 100-run mark.
In response, Southern Sharks stayed in the hunt throughout their chase, led by Isesele Evangel’s 26 off 21 balls and a quick burst from captain Isaac Okpe.
However, disciplined bowling and sharp fielding from the Tigers proved decisive in the final overs.
Ndubudem David starred with the ball, claiming 2 for 14, while Awodele Shina also picked up two wickets as the Tigers sealed a famous victory and the inaugural title.
Despite the heartbreak, the Southern Sharks earned praise for a spirited campaign, pushing the final deep and showcasing their growing pedigree.
Earlier, Northern Lions secured third place with a commanding 32-run win over Central Eagles in a shortened five-over playoff.
Elijah Jimmy and Akhere Isesele provided the batting spark, while Okasha Isiyaku and captain Okpe Sylvester led a dominant bowling display.
At the closing ceremony, Nigeria Cricket Federation President Uyi Akpata hailed the tournament as a breakthrough moment for domestic cricket development, praising the standard of play and organization.
LOC Chairman Seun Odeku also described the maiden edition as a strong foundation for an even bigger future.
Individual honours saw Solomon Chilemanya named Best Batter, Ndubudem David Best Bowler, Ridwan Kareem Best Fielder, Ismail Abdullahi Outstanding Young Player, and Isaac Danladi claiming the MVP award after a stellar all-round performance.
