Team Nigeria has continued its impressive outing at the ongoing African Taekwondo Championships in Bamako, Mali, amassing two gold and three bronze medals as the country targets more podium finishes before the competition concludes.

President of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation, Tayo Popoola, praised the athletes for their resilience and determination, describing their performance as a reflection of Nigeria’s growing strength in the sport.

Among the standout performers is Ability Matthews Udom, who won gold in the men’s (-57kg) Para Taekwondo event, while the team has also secured another gold medal to boost its campaign.

Nigeria’s bronze medal winners include Jordan Joel in the heavyweight (+87kg) Kyorugi category and Chidinma Okoko in the women’s (-62kg) division.

Popoola reserved special commendation for Joel, who was making his debut at the African Championships and battled against some of the continent’s most accomplished athletes.

“Jordan Joel had to face several Olympic and World Championship medalists. For him to secure a bronze medal under such circumstances speaks volumes about his courage, determination, and immense potential for the future,” she said.

The NTF President noted that the championship has attracted competitors from more than 35 countries, many of whom arrived with large contingents and internationally accomplished athletes.

“This is a very tough competition. Many countries arrived with over 30 athletes, including several international tournament champions. Despite that, Nigerian athletes are competing very well, and I believe we will continue to do well,” Popoola stated.

With the Kyorugi events nearing completion, Nigeria’s focus has shifted to the Poomsae competitions, where officials remain optimistic about adding more medals to the country’s tally.

“We are still competing in the Poomsae events and we hope to secure medals in various categories. I trust our Poomsae athletes to deliver and improve our position on the medal table,” she added.

As of Tuesday evening in Bamako, Team Nigeria had recorded two gold and three bronze medals, reinforcing the country’s growing reputation as one of Africa’s emerging taekwondo powers. Officials remain hopeful that the medal count will increase before the championships draw to a close.
