Oshiomhole’s Claims on Obi’s Security Record Are False – Ogene

The Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Caucus in the House of Representatives, Rep. Afam Victor-Ogene, has strongly dismissed comments by former Edo State Governor, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, comparing the security performance of the NDC presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in Anambra State with his own record in Edo State.

Ogene in a statement on Monday describe Oshiomhole’s remarks as “brazen falsehoods and revisionist comedy,” insisting that the claims are politically motivated and not supported by verifiable facts.

“Senator Oshiomhole’s revisionist attempt to rewrite history is both laughable and insulting to Nigerians who know the facts. The data on security under Obi’s tenure in Anambra remains public record,” Ogene said.

Oshiomhole had, in a recent podcast interview, faulted Obi’s security record in Anambra State, arguing that it was poor and questioning his suitability to address Nigeria’s current security challenges.

However, Ogene countered that the former governor selectively distorted historical events, including issues relating to armed groups and security interventions in the South-East, to mislead the public.

He also accused Oshiomhole of repeatedly engaging in political exaggeration and inconsistencies, saying his comments reflect “desperation rather than fact-based analysis.”

“What revisionist history would Oshiomhole teach Nigerian children when he cannot accurately situate simple national events?” he queried.

The NDC caucus leader further maintained that Peter Obi’s administration in Anambra State prioritised security through structured support for law enforcement agencies, adding that several security achievements recorded during that period remain documented and publicly verifiable.

He cited testimony from former Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Philemon Leha, who praised the cooperation received from the Obi administration.

“Security was on his priority list, and he always offered us logistics and other support on a scale I had not witnessed elsewhere,” Leha was quoted as saying.

Ogene added that attempts to discredit Obi’s record were politically driven ahead of the 2027 general elections, describing the attacks as coordinated but ineffective.

He maintained that Obi remains within his constitutional rights to contest for the presidency, warning against what he called “orchestrated smear campaigns” targeted at undermining his political ambition.

“Like every other Nigerian, Obi is entitled to exercise his fundamental rights. No amount of sponsored attacks can take away that right,” he said.

The statement was signed by Hon. Afam Victor Ogene, Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Caucus in the House of Representatives.
