The Coalition for the Protection of Democracy (COPDEM) has called on the National Judicial Council (NJC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to exercise caution and uphold constitutional principles in handling issues arising from the recent court proceedings on the registration status of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In a statement signed by its National Chairman, Prince Rwang Pam, COPDEM said the developments surrounding the judicial proceedings have generated widespread public interest, stressing that Nigeria’s democracy depends on an independent judiciary, an impartial electoral body and the unrestricted participation of citizens in the political process.
The coalition urged all relevant institutions to discharge their constitutional responsibilities with fairness, transparency and strict adherence to the rule of law.
“We therefore urge all relevant institutions to uphold their constitutional mandates with fairness, transparency, and unwavering adherence to the rule of law,” the statement read.
COPDEM specifically called on the National Judicial Council to maintain the highest standards of judicial integrity and public confidence, insisting that any allegations of judicial misconduct should be investigated promptly through constitutionally recognised processes.
The group also urged INEC to remain impartial in carrying out its responsibilities, ensuring full compliance with the Constitution and the Electoral Act while guaranteeing equal treatment for all eligible political parties and voters.
On voter registration, COPDEM encouraged all eligible Nigerians to register and participate actively in the democratic process, while expressing concern over the current voter registration deadline.
According to the coalition, extending the registration period would provide an opportunity for more young Nigerians who attain the age of 18 before the next general elections to register and exercise their voting rights, while allowing INEC to balance such an extension with its administrative and logistical requirements.
The group called for constructive engagement between stakeholders and the electoral commission to address the concerns within the provisions of the law.
COPDEM further appealed to political parties, civil society organisations, security agencies and citizens to respect lawful court decisions and ensure that all public actions and demonstrations remain peaceful and in line with constitutional provisions.
The coalition maintained that Nigeria’s democracy would be strengthened when political disputes are resolved through due process, elections are conducted with credibility and integrity, and citizens are able to freely and peacefully exercise their democratic rights.
It reaffirmed its commitment to constitutional democracy, civic participation, accountability and the peaceful resolution of political differences.
