President Bola Tinubu has described civil society organisations (CSOs) as key partners in Nigeria’s development, urging them to work more closely with government to promote transparency, accountability and sustainable growth.
Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, Tinubu made the call on Wednesday at the National Civil Society Organisations Summit 2026 and Southern Civil Society Organisations Summit in Lagos.
Speaking on the theme “Nigeria First,” the President said CSOs had moved beyond activism to become vital contributors to national progress. He noted their role during the COVID-19 pandemic and their continued support in tackling flooding, climate change and public health emergencies.
Tinubu said the Nigeria First agenda prioritises the welfare of Nigerians through policies and investments that align with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He urged CSOs to strengthen their roles in budget tracking, community monitoring, data sharing, social accountability and independent evaluation of government programmes.
The President identified food security, poverty reduction, good governance and human capital development as areas requiring stronger collaboration. He also called for climate-smart agriculture, wetland protection and renewable energy investments to create jobs, especially for young people and women.
Tinubu welcomed constructive criticism from civil society groups, describing accountability as essential for effective governance. He also urged CSOs to strengthen internal governance and self-regulation to protect the credibility of the sector, while reaffirming his commitment to regular engagement with civil society.
