The Director-General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), Professor Abubakar Sulaiman, has called for the inclusion of a newly published book on the Nigerian legislature in the curriculum of legislative studies across educational institutions in the country.
Sulaiman made the recommendation while delivering a goodwill message at the public presentation of The Nigerian Legislature: Understanding Its Impact on Democratic Governance and National Development, authored by Ezrel Tabiowo, former Media Adviser to the President of the 9th Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan.
The book was unveiled on Monday at the National Assembly Library Trust Fund Complex.
The NILDS Director-General described the publication as a significant addition to existing literature on Nigeria’s legislature, expressing confidence that it would deepen public understanding of democratic governance and legislative processes.
He noted that the author’s years of experience in the legislative space positioned him to produce an authoritative work that would benefit legislators, legislative aides, parliamentary staff, researchers, students and policy makers.
According to him, the publication offers an extensive examination of the legislature’s constitutional responsibilities, including lawmaking, representation and oversight, while also analysing the relationship among the executive, legislature and judiciary.
Sulaiman added that the book provides practical recommendations aimed at strengthening the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly to improve democratic governance and institutional effectiveness.
“I believe that this book will not only be a very valuable contribution to the literature on the Nigerian legislature, it will also be a great resource for those who work in the legislative space as well as those seeking an in-depth understanding of democracy and governance,” he said.
He urged institutions offering legislative studies to adopt the publication as part of their academic curriculum and recommended it as a reference material for legislators, legislative aides, legislative staff and other stakeholders in the policy-making process.
Commending Tabiowo for the publication, the NILDS boss described the work as a valuable scholarly resource that would contribute to research and knowledge on legislative studies.
He also praised the organisers of the book launch, expressing optimism that the publication would advance scholarship and strengthen understanding of the role of the legislature in Nigeria’s democratic development.
