Traditional rulers in Bende South State Constituency have endorsed the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, for a third term in the House, dismissing claims that the Bende Federal Constituency seat is subject to a zoning arrangement.
A statement on Wednesday by Udora Orizu, SA Press Affairs to the Deputy Speaker qoutes the royal fathers as making their position known during a meeting with the Deputy Speaker in Bende, Abia State.
Speaking on behalf of the monarchs, Chairman of the Bende South State Constituency (Ikwuisi) Traditional Rulers Council, Eze Uchendu Okorie, Ekwo II of Akaekwo Uzuakoli, praised Kalu’s performance in office and urged him to seek re-election in 2027.
“What you’re doing in Bende Federal Constituency is commendable. We are fully supporting you. Keep moving forward,” the monarch said.
“We are saying with one voice that you should go for a third term. We are solidly behind you and we will walk the talk. Whoever is contesting against you is challenging efficiency and competence.”
The traditional rulers said Kalu’s legislative performance, constituency projects and ability to attract federal presence had distinguished him from previous representatives of the constituency.
Also speaking, Eze P.C. Onyegbu, dismissed claims that there was an existing zoning agreement for the Bende Federal Constituency seat.
“The issue of zoning has always been distorted,” he said.
“Of all those who have represented Bende in the House of Representatives, none has surpassed what Benjamin Kalu has done. In terms of projects, quality representation, oversight functions, networking and attracting federal presence, he has distinguished himself.”
The monarch added that Kalu’s position as Deputy Speaker has elevated Bende, Abia State and the South-East on the national stage.
“If Bende compromises this opportunity, we will live to regret it. His position is not only important to Bende but also to Abia State, the South-East and the entire Igbo nation,” he said.
Another traditional ruler, **Eze Patrick Udeh of Bende**, also threw his weight behind the Deputy Speaker’s re-election bid.
“You are serving us well, not only in Bende but across Igboland. Go for a third term without fear and continue making us proud,” he said.
Responding, Kalu thanked the traditional rulers for their confidence and support, describing their endorsement as a source of encouragement.
“I am deeply humbled by your confidence and support. Everything we have achieved has been possible because of your prayers, cooperation and trust,” he said.
The Deputy Speaker highlighted projects executed in infrastructure, healthcare, education, agriculture, youth and women empowerment, among other sectors.
He pledged to attract more development to Bende if re-elected.
“I remain committed to providing quality representation, attracting more development projects and ensuring that Bende continues to enjoy the benefits of effective leadership. By the grace of God, the best is still ahead of us,” Kalu said
