National Policing Bill Ready for Transmission to NASS in Two Weeks

The National Policing Bill is nearing completion, with the Presidential Working Group targeting its transmission to the National Assembly within two weeks.

Chief of Staff to the President and Chairman of the Working Group, Femi Gbajabiamila, disclosed this on Thursday after a steering committee meeting at the State House in Abuja.

According to a statement signed by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, Gbajabiamila said the bill was about 90 per cent complete, with the committee expected to address outstanding observations raised by state governors before finalising the document.

He also expressed confidence that states would support the proposed constitutional amendment to establish state police, citing what he described as a national consensus on the need for policing reforms.

The proposed legislation is part of broader efforts to reform Nigeria’s policing system and strengthen security through a framework that could accommodate state-level policing.

The meeting was attended by the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq; Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun; Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani; and the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, among other officials.
