Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has called on residents of the FCT to support President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections, citing ongoing infrastructure development across the territory as reason for his call.
Wike made the appeal in Abuja Thursday, during a visit by the FCT Stakeholders Assembly at the Federal Capital Development Authority conference hall.
He said despite the President receiving less than six percent of votes from the FCT in the 2023 elections, the administration has continued to deliver projects across satellite towns and area councils.
“You made a mistake in 2023. You did not give the President up to six percent, yet development is reaching your communities. Imagine what more can be achieved with your support,” Wike said.
The minister stressed that the FCT stands to benefit more if the current administration is re-elected, adding that governance should not be influenced by past voting patterns.
On political representation, Wike urged residents to elect experienced lawmakers, particularly to the Senate, noting that legislative effectiveness depends on capacity and ranking.
“The Senate requires experience. Representation must go beyond visibility to actual influence and results,” he added.
He expressed support for former Senator Philip Aduda, describing him as experienced and capable of advancing the interests of the FCT at the National Assembly.
Wike also cautioned area council chairmen against pursuing higher political offices prematurely, urging them to focus on delivering on their current mandates.
Addressing agriculture, the minister directed that tractors be provided to chiefdoms across the FCT to boost food production, while also calling for nominations to fill vacant traditional leadership positions.
On education, Wike warned area council chairmen to take responsibility for resolving issues affecting primary schools, including recurring strikes by teachers.
“Our children cannot remain at home. Education is a priority and must be treated as such,” he said.
Earlier, President of the FCT Stakeholders Assembly, Aliyu Kwali, commended the minister for initiatives supporting indigenous communities, including increased compensation for land and plans to issue Certificates of Occupancy.
At the event, the Ona of Abaji, Adamu Yunusa, conferred the traditional title of “Hasken Abuja” on the minister in recognition of his contributions to infrastructure development in the FCT.
