Bamidele Urges Peaceful Campaigns Ahead of 2027 Elections

By Anayo Akwitti

The Leader of the Senate, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, has urged political parties and their candidates to conduct peaceful in compliance with the Electoral Act 2026 and the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

Bamidele, who is also Chairman of the South-West Caucus in the National Assembly, made the call in his Independence Day message marking Nigeria’s 66th anniversary on Thursday.

He urged political actors to shun derogatory comments, hate speech and inflammatory statements capable of undermining the peaceful conduct of the 2027 general election.

According to him, while political actors have the right to exercise their political rights, such rights must be exercised within the confines of the law.

He warned that political activities must not trigger unrest or ethno-religious violence before, during or after the elections.

Bamidele said political aspirations should be pursued with decorum, patriotism and restraint, stressing that “no ambition is worth setting the nation ablaze.”

Bamidele also urged political parties and candidates to ensure that their campaign agendas reflect the wishes and aspirations of Nigerians and contribute to national unity.

He said peaceful political campaigns were essential to sustaining Nigeria’s democratic development and protecting the country’s collective heritage.
