As preparations gather pace for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Germany, President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, Ahmed Kida, has called on Nigerians across the globe to unite in support of the country’s women’s national team, D’Tigress.
Nigeria faces a daunting challenge in Group B, where they will battle basketball heavyweights France, Hungary, and South Korea—widely regarded as one of the tournament’s toughest pools.
Despite the difficult draw, Kida expressed strong confidence in the team’s ability to compete at the highest level, describing D’Tigress as one of Nigeria’s most consistent and disciplined national sides. He urged citizens at home and in the diaspora to give the team the same passion and backing traditionally reserved for football.
“D’Tigress have continued to carry the Nigerian flag with courage, discipline, and determination on the global stage,” he said. “This is the time for Nigerians everywhere to stand firmly behind them.”
Kida emphasized that national pride should go beyond sporting preferences, noting that athletes perform better when they feel the support of their country.
“Our players need to know that the nation believes in them—not just when they win, but even before the competition begins,” he added.
The NBBF boss also highlighted the steady growth of basketball in Nigeria, attributing it to the resilience and dedication of the players. He stressed that stronger public support would further inspire the team as they prepare for the global showpiece.
With the countdown to Germany 2026 already underway, expectations are rising for D’Tigress to once again showcase their quality on the world stage. Backed by millions of Nigerians worldwide, the team will aim to turn a challenging group into a moment of national pride.
