Kwara Government Arrests Six for Illegal Refuse Dumping

By Sofiat Adenekan-Abdul

The Kwara State Government has stepped up enforcement against environmental violations in Ilorin metropolis, arresting six persons for illegal refuse dumping and sealing two facilities over excessive noise pollution.

The Commissioner for Environment, Nafisat Buge, disclosed this during a review of reports submitted by Environmental Health Officers and members of the ministry’s task force.

The ministry’s Press Secretary, Muritala Shakirat, confirmed the development in a statement released on Friday.

Illegal Dumping

Buge said enforcement teams intensified monitoring operations to tackle indiscriminate refuse disposal and rising noise pollution within the state capital.

She explained that illegal waste dumping on road medians and unauthorized locations continues to pose serious environmental and public health threats.

According to her, blocked drainage channels caused by waste disposal could worsen flooding and sanitation problems across communities.

Government Seals Facilities

The commissioner revealed that officials sealed two facilities after residents reported excessive and disturbing noise levels.

She also confirmed the arrest of six offenders linked to illegal refuse dumping.

“Environmental Team sealed off no fewer than two facilities where excessive and unbearable noise level were reported within the metropolis and six offenders were arrested for dumping refuse on the road median,” she stated.

Residents Face Tougher Sanctions

Buge warned that the government would continue to enforce environmental regulations strictly.

She stressed that violators would face sanctions for actions capable of endangering public health and environmental sustainability.

The commissioner described indiscriminate waste disposal as a major factor contributing to environmental contamination and disease outbreaks.

Government Calls for Public Cooperation

Buge urged residents to comply with environmental laws, especially regulations guiding waste disposal and permissible noise levels during night hours.

She noted that the advisory became necessary as social activities increase during the festive period.

The commissioner reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining a cleaner and safer environment across Kwara State.
