No Limits: Nigerian Referee Ogechi Inspires Through Armwrestling Journey

By Arinzechi Chukwunonso

From athlete to continental referee, Nigerian armwrestling official Nmeka Vivian Ogechi is proving that setbacks can become stepping stones to greatness.

The Imo State-born referee, who now serves under the Armwrestling Federation of Africa, recently represented Nigeria as an official at the 15th African Armwrestling Championship in Accra, Ghana — a milestone she describes as both emotional and rewarding.

Ogechi’s journey into armwrestling began in 2022 when she joined Energy Gym House in Owerri. Though she had admired the sport for years, it was that same year she fully embraced competition, representing Nigeria in the women’s 65kg senior category at the African Championship in Lagos.

However, an injury sustained during the tournament changed the course of her career. Instead of walking away from the sport, she found a new purpose in officiating after encouragement from the President of the Nigerian Armwrestling Federation, Samuel Jackson.

“I couldn’t allow injury to separate me from a sport I truly love,” she said.

Since making the transition, Ogechi has steadily built a reputation as one of Nigeria’s promising young referees, emphasizing concentration, confidence, and sound knowledge of the rules as vital qualities for officiating the fast-paced sport.

“Everything happens quickly at the table. Referees must stay alert and make accurate decisions instantly,” she explained.

Despite challenges such as loud venue distractions and language barriers during the championship in Ghana, Ogechi said teamwork and official sign language protocols ensured smooth officiating throughout the competition.

Beyond personal success, she hopes her story will encourage more young women to explore opportunities in sports officiating.

“Sports is rewarding. Stay consistent, work hard, and never stop believing in your dreams. The sky is only the beginning,” she said.

Inspired by legendary armwrestler Devon Larratt and his famous mantra, “No Limits,” Ogechi remains determined to continue rising in the sport she loves.
