NPFL Moves Plateau United Home Games Over Security Fears

By Arinzechi Chukwunonso

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has approved the relocation of all remaining home fixtures of Plateau United for the rest of the season, citing growing security concerns in Plateau State.

NPFL Chairman, Gbenga Elegbeleye, confirmed that the decision was taken in the interest of safety, as the league enters a decisive phase where every point could define title ambitions and relegation battles.

Elegbeleye stressed that the welfare of players, match officials, and traveling teams remains paramount, noting that the board could not ignore the prevailing security challenges in the region.

“The board had to act as we approach the final stretch of the season. While every match is important, we are equally concerned about the safety of teams. We want matches played in a conducive environment that allows players perform at their best, while we hope for a return to normalcy in Plateau State,” he said.

Although an alternative venue is yet to be officially confirmed, the directive means Plateau United will play their remaining “home” matches away from their traditional base until further notice.

The development comes at a delicate time for Plateau United, who currently sit ninth on the NPFL table but remain within touching distance of the relegation zone.

With the campaign nearing its conclusion, any dip in form could significantly impact their survival hopes.

The NPFL’s decision underscores its commitment to maintaining competitive integrity while prioritizing safety, as the season heads into a tense and defining run-in.
