Tinubu seeks Senate Approval of 15 nominees for Human Rights Commission

By Anayo Akwitti

President Bola Tinubu wants the Senate to confirm 15 nominees for appointment into the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

This is in a move to strengthen the country’s human rights framework.

The request was conveyed in a formal letter read during plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who subsequently referred the nominations to the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters for screening.

Among the nominees, Dr. Salamatu Husaina Suleiman has been named Chairman of the Commission, while Dr. Anthony Okechukwu Ojukwu is nominated as Executive Secretary. The remaining 13 nominees are drawn from diverse backgrounds, including law, civil society, and public service.

President Tinubu noted that the nominations comply with the provisions of the National Human Rights Commission Act, 2010, and urged lawmakers to expedite their consideration.

The Senate committee is expected to screen the nominees and report back within two weeks, setting the stage for final confirmation and the inauguration of a reconstituted Commission.
