TUC Backs Shehu Mohammed-Led ASCSN

By Chinedu Echianu

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, has reaffirmed its recognition of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, ASCSN, leadership led by Comrade Shehu Mohammed.

In a circular signed by its Secretary General, Nuhu Toro, the TUC says its position followed the outcome of the ASCSN Delegates Conference held in Lagos, on 12 August 2024.

The Congress said the conference was observed by the Registrar of Trade Unions in the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Amos Falonipe, as well as the then TUC President General, Festus Osifo, and Secretary General, Nuhu Toro.

The TUC expressed concern over the attempts by individuals and groups to present themselves as ASCSN leaders, saying such activities could undermine unity and discipline within the labour movement.

It also says reliance on a lower court judgment by those individuals was misleading, noting that the judgment had been appealed at the Court of Appeal by the Shehu Mohammed-led administration.

The Congress said that pending the final determination of the legal issues by the courts, those individuals had no authority, in its view, to represent or conduct business on behalf of ASCSN.

It consequently advises ministries, departments and agencies, employers, development partners and members of the public to deal with the Shehu Mohammed-led leadership.

The TUC also called on security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services, to investigate what it described as alleged impersonation and take appropriate action.

The Congress said it would use lawful and institutional mechanisms to defend ASCSN and uphold democratic processes within the labour movement.
