Workers Day: NILDS to Boost Productivity with Health Centre

The National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies has pledged stronger staff welfare measures, including the establishment of an in-house health centre, as part of efforts to improve productivity and institutional performance.

Director-Genera of NILDS, Professor Abubakar Sulaiman, made the announcement in Abuja during the institute’s first Workers’ Day celebration, tagged DG’s Social and Sports Day, marking International Workers’ Day 2026.

The initiative comes amid growing calls for public institutions to prioritise workforce well-being as a driver of efficiency and governance outcomes.

The event featured sporting and recreational activities including football, badminton, chess, Ludo, Scrabble, and aerobics, aimed at strengthening teamwork, staff engagement, and work-life balance.

Professor Sulaiman said Workers’ Day provides an opportunity to recognise the critical role of staff in building strong democratic institutions and enhancing legislative effectiveness.

He stressed that the institute’s workforce remains central to its mandate of supporting governance through capacity development.

The Director-General also outlined key reforms already in place, including improved allowances, expanded staff development programmes, and better working conditions.

He stated that the proposed health centre will address gaps in access to medical care, a key component of staff welfare.

NILDS DG however assured that the sport programm will be carried out quarterly.

Also speaking, Director of Human Resources and Administration, Moshood Musibau, said the initiative reflects management’s commitment to staff engagement, unity, and overall well-being.

The development signals a broader shift toward staff-centred policies across public institutions, as the link between employee welfare and service delivery continues to gain attention.

Highlight of the event is the award of over one million naira to winners in the various activities.
