The House of Representatives Nigeria has rescinded its earlier decision to allow real-time electronic transmission of election results after a tense and rowdy session in Abuja.
The Committee of the Whole, presided over by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, witnessed heated exchanges as lawmakers disagreed over Clause 60(3) of the proposed amendment to the Electoral Act.
Tension began shortly after plenary commenced, forcing members into a closed-door session that lasted nearly two hours. But tempers remained high when the House reconvened to continue deliberations, with sharp divisions over the method of transmitting election results.
Meanwhile, the Senate of Nigeria also went into a closed-door session to consider issues relating to the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.
The development highlights growing disagreements within the National Assembly over key electoral reforms ahead of future elections.
