The caucus of the African Democratic Congress in the House of Representatives has called for the removal and prosecution of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC, Professor Joash Amupitan.
The lawmakers alleged bias and misconduct, which they say could undermine the credibility of the 2027 general election.
Caucus leader, Afam Ogene, made the position known at a news briefing in Abuja.
The group accused the INEC chairman of lacking neutrality and raised concerns over alleged partisan comments linked to him on social media, despite the commission’s denial.
They also accused INEC of interfering in the party’s internal affairs by recognising a disputed leadership faction.
The caucus further alleged possible collaboration between some INEC officials and elements within the judiciary in an ongoing case, yet to be independently verified.
The lawmakers warned that the situation could erode public confidence in the electoral and judicial systems ahead of the 2027 elections.
Responding, INEC said the controversy surrounding the alleged partisan posts is a case of digital impersonation targeting the institution rather than an individual.
INEC’s ICT Director, Lawrence Bayode, who spoke during a television interview, said the issue highlights the dangers of misinformation and fake social media accounts.
He urged the public to remain vigilant and verify information, stressing the importance of fact-checking in a democratic system.
The commission also warned that cybercriminals are using impersonation tactics to mislead the public and said it is working with security agencies to track those responsible.
