Nyesom Wike Says Opposition Must Win Elections

By sofiat Adenekan-Abdul

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, says political parties can only earn opposition status through electoral victories, not through alliances formed outside the ballot process.

Wike made the statement during a visit to the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party in Abuja.

He said parties claiming to lead the opposition must demonstrate their strength through election results, stressing that credibility comes from voter support.

“You cannot become an opposition party without winning an election,” he said.

The minister also used the visit to reaffirm his support for the party’s National Working Committee. He said the move was aimed at encouraging unity as the party works to rebuild after internal challenges.

Wike acknowledged that the party had experienced a crisis but noted that efforts are ongoing to stabilise its structure. He called on the leadership to focus on reconciliation, especially by engaging former members who may be willing to return.

He also advised the leadership to remain focused amid ongoing legal matters, expressing confidence in the party’s position.

Responding, National Chairman of the party, Abdulrahman Mohammed, said the leadership is committed to repositioning the party and regaining public confidence ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Also speaking, National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, described the visit as encouraging for the party leadership.
