Popular Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo has reportedly died at the age of 40, according to tributes shared by colleagues and associates on social media.
Actress Funke Akindele confirmed the development in a post shared via her Instagram story on Tuesday, mourning the late actor and recalling their friendship.
“Rest in peace, Alex. I tried to reach out to see you one more time, but I guess you knew best. May your kind soul rest in peace,” she wrote.
Actor Bolanle Ninalowo also paid tribute, praying for strength for the actor’s family and loved ones.
Another Nollywood actor, Godwin Nnadiekwe, described the news as heartbreaking, saying the industry had lost “a rare soul.”
As of the time of filing this report, no official statement had been released by Ekubo’s family regarding the circumstances surrounding his death.
The actor had recently returned to public attention after months away from social media, sparking concerns among fans over his wellbeing. A viral video circulating online showed him interacting with children, with many observers noting a visible change in his appearance.
Before his death, Ekubo had openly spoken about prioritising his career and financial goals over marriage. His past relationship with US-based model Fancy Acholonu also attracted public attention following the cancellation of their planned wedding in 2021.
Ekubo was widely known for his roles in several Nollywood productions and remained one of the industry’s recognisable faces over the past decade.
