A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Salisu Al-min Mohammed, has constructed a modern three-block toilet facility at Government Senior Secondary School, Piwoyi, Lugbe, Abuja, in a move aimed at improving sanitation and creating a healthier learning environment for students.
The project, inaugurated on Wednesday by the Director General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) Prof. Abubakar Suleiman was executed as part of Mohammed’s Community Development Service (CDS) initiative.
The commissioning ceremony attracted the FCT Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Mr. Samson Ateli, the school’s management, teachers, students, and community leaders.
The facility was designed to address the school’s longstanding sanitation challenges, particularly for female students, and is expected to improve hygiene standards while enhancing the overall learning environment.
Speaking at the event, Mohammed who currently undertakes his service year at NILDS expressed gratitude to everyone who supported the project, describing the facility as more than just a physical structure.
“This three-block toilet facility is more than just bricks and mortar; it is a symbol of commitment, resilience, and the transformative power of national service,” he said.
The corps member said he was honoured to make a meaningful contribution to the welfare of students and the host community during his service year. He noted that the facility was specifically built to serve female students and pledged to continue supporting community development initiatives whenever the opportunity arises.
In his keynote address, Prof. Sulaiman commended the corps member for his vision and commitment, describing the project as an example of the positive impact young Nigerians can make through the NYSC scheme.
He said the initiative aligns with the country’s development objectives and demonstrates the importance of youth participation in addressing community needs.
“The NYSC remains one of Nigeria’s finest platforms for harnessing the energy and creativity of young graduates. Today’s commissioning is proof that when young people are empowered, they can solve real problems and leave lasting legacies,” he said.
The NILDS Director-General also encouraged Nigerians to give back to their communities in whatever way they can, adding that he remains committed to supporting initiatives that improve the lives of citizens.
The Principal of Government Senior Secondary School, N. Abdulmalik, described the project as timely and impactful.
She noted that inadequate sanitation facilities had been a major challenge for the school over the years and expressed appreciation to the corps member for addressing a critical need.
“For years, inadequate sanitation has been a major concern for us. This new facility will greatly improve convenience and hygiene for our female students. We are deeply grateful for this invaluable gift,” she said.
Mohammed conceived the project after identifying sanitation as one of the school’s most pressing needs during his assessment of the host community.
Construction was made possible through support from the school management, the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), community members and other well-wishers.
The completed facility comprises three toilet units fitted with modern water closets, urinals, reliable plumbing systems and a steady water supply.
The commissioning ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks, presentation of appreciation to supporters, and group photographs, while speakers urged other corps members to emulate Mohammed’s commitment to community service.
The project is expected to improve student welfare, strengthen the partnership between the NYSC and host communities, and contribute to a more conducive environment for teaching and learning at the school.
