Leaders and members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Wednesday staged a protest in Abuja under the #OccupyINEC banner, accusing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of actions they say threaten democracy and interference in the party’s leadership.

The demonstration at Maitama Roundabout drew top opposition figures, including Rotimi Amaechi, Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Rauf Aregbesola, Aminu Tambuwal, and Dino Melaye, alongside members of the Kwankwasiyya movement.

Protesters sang the former national anthem, “Arise, O Compatriots!”, in what the party described as “an act of defiance.” Many also displayed placards backing David Mark, reflecting the party’s leadership dispute.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election and now ADC Chieftain, Peter Obi said, “We, members and leaders of the ADC and other well-meaning Nigerians, are saying that our democracy must not be killed. We say no to a one-party system and call on Nigerians to join us in defending democracy.”

Our Correspondent reports that the protest follows INEC’s decision to suspend recognition of correspondence from rival ADC factions led by David Mark and Nafiu Bala after a Court of Appeal ruling.

The party described the move as interference in its internal affairs.
Also speaking, Yunusa Tanko said, “This commission is now becoming the arbiter, judge, accuser and defender at the same time. Nigerians are angry and ready to express it through peaceful protest.”

The protest remained peaceful, with organisers emphasising civic engagement and accountability.
