Nigeria Mourns as Ambassador Lele Dies in Ankara

Nigeria’s diplomatic community has been thrown into mourning following the death of Ambassador Mohammed Mahmud Lele, who passed away in the early hours of April 19, 2026, in Ankara, Türkiye.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed his demise in a statement issued by its Spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, noting that the seasoned diplomat died after a protracted illness.

Until his passing, Ambassador Lele served as Director in charge of the Middle East and Gulf Division of the Ministry. He had also recently been appointed Ambassador-Designate to Algeria by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, with his nomination already confirmed by the Senate.

Born in 1976 in Gamawa, Bauchi State, Lele was an alumnus of Bayero University Kano, where he studied Economics before joining the Nigerian Foreign Service in 2001.

Over the course of his distinguished career, he served in several Nigerian missions abroad, including Berlin, Lomé, and Riyadh, earning a reputation for intellectual depth, strategic insight, and unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives.

His remains were received in Abuja by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, alongside senior officials, at the International Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

Describing the late envoy as hardworking, humble, and exemplary, the Permanent Secretary said his contributions to the Foreign Service would not be forgotten.

Ambassador Lele was laid to rest on April 22, 2026, in Kano, in accordance with Islamic rites.

The Ministry extended its condolences to his family, colleagues, and loved ones, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul and strength for those he left behind.
