Bovi Suggests 5-Year Marriage Renewal to Strengthen Bonds

Nigerian comedian and actor Bovi Ugboma has proposed that marriages should be formally renewed every five years to help couples stay accountable and more intentional in their relationships.

Speaking on the Dear Ife podcast, Bovi said a structured renewal process could encourage couples to regularly reflect on their marriage, address unresolved issues, and consciously decide whether to continue the union.

He explained that the idea is not intended to promote divorce but to create space for honest conversations and mutual recommitment between partners.

According to him, periodic reviews may be particularly useful in African societies, where marriage often involves not just the couple but also extended families.

“Every marriage should be renewed, for example, every five years. It gives both families and the couple an opportunity to discuss what has been happening and decide if they still want to continue together,” he said.

Bovi added that the awareness of an upcoming “renewal” could encourage couples to resolve conflicts early and remain more mindful of their actions within the relationship.

His comments have sparked mixed reactions on social media. While some users praised the suggestion as a practical way to strengthen marriages, others argued that marriage should remain a lifelong commitment that does not require periodic renewal.
