PDP Moves to End Crisis, Sets Stage for Congresses, Convention

By Sofiat Adenekan-Abdul

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is stepping up moves to end months of internal crisis, shifting attention to unity, reconciliation and preparations for its long-delayed congresses ahead of a national convention.

At the 85th Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting in Abuja, BoT Chairman Senator Mao Ohuabunwa said the party stands at a crossroads after prolonged leadership disputes and legal battles.

The BoT explained that postponing congresses was intentional and done out of respect for ongoing court processes, noting that prioritising legality over rushed action helped preserve internal order.

With recent court rulings — including a Federal High Court judgment in Ibadan affirming the Abdulrahman-led National Caretaker Committee — party leaders say the focus is now on healing divisions and rebuilding trust.

They cautioned against comments or actions that could deepen internal fractures, stressing that unity is now a strategic necessity.

National Caretaker Committee Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed said preparations are underway to release a timetable for outstanding congresses, which will lead to a seamless national convention.

He described the PDP as a party rooted in the people and urged stakeholders to avoid complacency.

With legal issues easing and reconciliation talks ongoing, the party says it is repositioning itself as a credible and organised alternative.
